Outerlore is a series of self-guided audio walking tours. Each tour takes you on a journey through the rich history, legends, and lore of the Outer Banks. Each story has its own unique narrator, soundtrack and sound effects to help immerse you fully in the experience.

To take a tour, simply visit our “Tours” page and choose a tour. From there you can purchase the appropriate option for the number of people in your party, at which point you’ll create an account. Once complete, you can share your account information with your group, at which point any of you can log in at any time to access the tour content and begin your experience with Outerlore.

• To access the tour content, a smart phone with a data plan to access the internet is required.

• To be fully immersed in the tour, and to ensure a pleasant experience for others, headphones/earbuds/AirPods should be worn by each participant.

• Bug spray and sunscreen.

• Weather-appropriate attire, as the experience is weather-dependent, but comfortable clothes and shoes are always a good choice for a pleasant and enjoyable tour.

• If you plan to embark after sunset, a flashlight is recommended.

Although we encourage guests to bring their own headphones, we acknowledge that last-minute purchases may be necessary. For this reason we have earbuds and iPhone dongle adapters available for sale at two locations in downtown Manteo:

The Downtown Manteo social district is a defined area where alcoholic beverages, sold by an establishment licensed for the sale of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption, may be consumed while you walk around. For more information, please review the guidelines provided by the Town of Manteo.

Outerlore tours can be taken at any time, but during the summer months, it is recommended to avoid the midday heat. For the best ambiance and atmosphere, evenings and dusk are ideal times to embark on the tour.

For convenient parking during your visit, we recommend utilizing the parking spaces available at Roanoke Island Festival Park, located on the left side just after crossing the downtown Manteo Bridge. While this is the ideal parking area as this is where the tour starts, please keep in mind that during events taking place in Downtown Manteo or at Roanoke Island Festival Park, parking availability may be limited. We encourage you to plan accordingly and allow extra time if needed to find alternative parking options nearby. Linked below are event calendars for the area.

• The duration of the tour will vary depending on each individual’s pace, typically ranging from one hour to one hour and thirty minutes.

• Each individual tale ranges anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes.

• If following the curated walking tour through Festival Park and Downtown Manteo, the tour walk spans approximately 1.7 miles.

The stories presented in Outerlore are based on a rich tapestry of lore, legends, and tales from the Outer Banks, which have been passed down for generations. While some stories are undoubtedly true, others may not have concrete historical evidence. However if you happened to ask the right Outer Banks native, they just might passionately convince you!.

While Outerlore is designed to captivate audiences of all ages, it's important to note that certain stories within the tour touch upon themes of violence and tragedy, as well as ghosts and hauntings. Therefore, we recommend the tour for individuals aged 13 and older to ensure the content is appropriate and enjoyable for everyone.
