We recommend each participant purchase their own tour and enjoy through headphones for the best, most immersive experience!
Once you have purchased a tour and created an account, you will be granted access to an interactive map and playlist. The map will show your current location and can be updated as you walk. Don’t worry, there will also be a tutorial video on that page!
From the starting point, you will follow the map while listening to enchanting stories coupled with music and cinematic soundscapes.
Our friendly narrator, Alex, will introduce each tale and also help you find your way!

To access the tour content, a smart phone with a data plan to access the internet is required.
To be fully immersed in the tour, and to ensure a pleasant experience for others, headphones are highly recommended.
Bug spray and sunscreen.
Weather-appropriate attire, as the experience is weather-dependent, but comfortable clothes and shoes are always a good choice for a pleasant and enjoyable tour.
If you plan to embark after sunset, a flashlight is recommended.

Although we encourage guests to bring their own headphones, we acknowledge that last-minute purchases may be necessary. For this reason we have earbuds and iPhone dongle adapters available for sale at two locations in downtown Manteo:

Ocracoke Island
On Ocracoke Island, you will need to purchase headphones directly from the Ocracoke Variety Store.

Roanoke Island
This tour begins at Roanoke Island Festival Park.
1 Festival Park, Manteo, NC 27954.
While this is the ideal parking area as this is where the tour starts, please keep in mind that during events taking place in Downtown Manteo or at Roanoke Island Festival Park, parking availability may be limited.

Ocracoke Island
This tour begins at the Visitor Parking for Ocracoke Light Station & Springer’s Point, located on Lighthouse Road. Spaces are limited and it may be necessary to park elsewhere and walk or bike to the starting point.

The duration of the tour will vary depending on each individual’s pace, typically ranging from one to two hours.
Each individual tale ranges anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes.
Roanoke Island: If following the curated walking tour through Festival Park and Downtown Manteo, the tour walk spans approximately 1.7 miles.
Ocracoke Island: If following the curated walking tour through Springer’s Point & the village of Ocracoke, the tour walk spans approximately 2.3 miles.

Outerlore tours can be taken at any time, but during the summer months, it is recommended to avoid the midday heat. For the best ambiance and atmosphere, evenings and dusk are ideal times to embark on the tour.

The Downtown Manteo social district is a defined area where alcoholic beverages, sold by an establishment licensed for the sale of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption, may be consumed while you walk around. For more information, please review the guidelines provided by the Town of Manteo.

The stories presented in Outerlore are based on a rich tapestry of lore, legends, and tales from the Outer Banks, which have been passed down for generations. While some stories are undoubtedly true, others may not have concrete historical evidence. However if you happened to ask the right Outer Banks native, they just might passionately convince you!.

Some stories within the tour touch upon themes of violence and tragedy, as well as ghosts and hauntings. Therefore, we recommend the tour for individuals aged 13 and older to ensure the content is appropriate and enjoyable for everyone.
